Hotel Concept Design

Most hospitality projects begin with a piece of land, a collection of references, and a growing sense of what the place could become.

A hotel concept is the idea every later decision answers to. The architect, the interior designer, the chef and the general manager will each make hundreds of choices, and the concept is what makes those choices belong to one hotel. We write it before they are made, and carry it through to opening.

What a hotel concept holds

— the position, narrative and role of the property
— the type of guest it is built around
— the structure of the stay, from arrival to departure
— the property's relationship to its surroundings
— the experiences that give it character
— a shared direction for architecture and design, service, and operations

Concept development, from land to opening

We join wherever a project stands: the land just bought, the architect appointed, the walls going up. The concept is set down in one document, the concept book, which every discipline works from. Where it helps, we stay involved as the hotel takes form, reviewing the decisions that would carry it away from the idea.

Why place comes first

A hotel is never separate from the place it stands in. Concepts that begin with what is already there tend to hold longer, and a guest feels the difference long before they could name it. It shows in small decisions, such as who builds the hotel and whether they are from here.
